Give Peas a Chance…to be made into vodka

What do you get when you combine West Texas, Southeast Texas and black eyed peas?  Well it isn’t this band.

Instead, you get two guys who are making award winning vodka from black eyed peas  –  J. Todd Gregory and Scott Billings.

Todd and Scott met ten years ago through their wives.  They became best friends and even ended up living across the street from one another.  Todd retired from the banking industry and Scott, an accountant, was looking for a new adventure outside of the petroleum industry.  Scott convinced Todd to get off of the golf course (thank you Scott) and to invest in a business that the two friends could run together.  In August 2016, they purchased Black Eye Distilling from a mother and son team who had the original idea.  A drought had forced the family to decide what to do with their peas that year and they turned it into vodka.

Since buying the business, Todd and Scott have improved the original product and were able to start producing in December 2016. They are one of only five distillers in Texas that ferment their own vodka.  In March 2017, Black Eye Distilling opened its’ tasting room to the public.  Black Eyed Distilling is located on the Southside in an old Fort Worth Fire Station features the distilling column running up the old fire pole.  What other distiller has something that cool?

Black Eye has already won the following awards:

2017 Global Spirit Awards, Las Vegas, sponsored by Food and Beverage Magazine – Double Gold Medal and Best Traditional Vodka.  One of only 3 vodkas to receive Double Gold and the only non-flavored vodka to do so.
2017 The Fifty Best Awards New York– Gold Medal
2017 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition – Silver Medal.  Affiliated with The San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
2017 San Diego Spirits Festival – Silver Medal

Do yourself and a friend a favor, and schedule a tour at Black Eyed Distilling or stop in and sample one of their cocktails.  I promise you’ll love what you see and more importantly the vodka that they are serving up.
